This 1992 Jeep Cherokee isn’t the most well-traveled XJ I’ve encountered in a junkyard, but its final odometer reading of 352,943 miles is impressive. It’s comparable to another 1992 Cherokee I spotted in California last fall, which had accumulated 355,892 miles. It seems that 1992 was a remarkable year for Jeeps at the Toledo Assembly plant.
The highest-mileage junkyard vehicle I’ve documented was also built in the United States, albeit by a Japanese company. It was a one-owner 1996 Toyota Avalon with a staggering 949,863 miles. Among vehicles built in the US by US-based companies, today’s Junkyard Gem ranks third in terms of mileage, trailing behind the aforementioned 355k-mile Cherokee and a 1986 Oldsmobile Calais with 363,033 miles. Not to be outdone, Canadian-built cars by American companies have also racked up impressive mileage, including a 1994 Dodge Caravan with 434,475 miles and a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor with 412,013 miles, both hailing from the Province of Ontario.
For those in search of an engine known to endure vast distances, the AMC pushrod straight-six should be at the top of the list. With a lineage dating back to the 1965 Ramblers, this engine, if original equipment, is a 4.0-liter powerhouse delivering 190 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. Paired with the base five-speed Aisin manual transmission, this Jeep Cherokee was built to go the distance.
Although production of the XJ Cherokee in the US ceased in 2001, it continued in China until recently. Despite the strong values of well-maintained XJs in the market, this particular Jeep, with its rough condition and high mileage, may not be a candidate for restoration. However, it serves as a testament to the durability and longevity of the XJ Cherokee model.
