The new Volkswagen Golf R has been revealed with more power and a Black Edition trim. The updated Golf R showcases an illuminated badge for the first time and incorporates a new front bumper design that enhances aero efficiency. Optional 19-inch forged-alloy wheels contribute to saving up to eight kilos of unsprung mass per corner, improving performance.

Inside, the Golf R features a 12.9-inch display for its infotainment system, similar to the rest of the revised Golf range. The steering wheel includes haptic switches for controls, ensuring a more solid press to reduce accidental inputs. Both the hatchback and Estate versions of the R are equipped with an uprated version of the VW Group’s EA888 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, producing 329bhp. This power allows the hatch to accelerate from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds, with the Estate taking 0.2 seconds longer.

An optional Performance pack increases the speed limiter to 167mph and adds track-focused driving modes, including a Nordschleife setting. The launch version of the car, called Black Edition, offers unique design elements such as black 19-inch Estoril wheels, black brake calipers, and darkened matrix-LED headlights. Pricing for the UK market is expected to start around £42,500, with a premium of approximately £2k for the Black Edition.
