Fiat is ready to take on the mid-size SUV market with two new models that will challenge popular vehicles like the Nissan Qashqai. At a recent event celebrating Fiat’s 125th anniversary, CEO Olivier François announced plans for two affordable and spacious new models that will cater to family-car customers. These models will be based on an enlarged Grande Panda platform and will offer a fresh take on the compact SUV format that has been popular in Europe.

The first model will be a traditional boxy SUV with off-roader design cues, while the second model will be a more sleek and fastback coupe-SUV. Both models will feature Fiat’s charismatic design language with bold colors and quirky shapes. The design will be inspired by Fiat’s Panda Concepts from last year, with a focus on being boxy and charming. The Smart Car platform from Stellantis Group will underpin these new models, allowing for flexibility in wheelbase and track width to compete in the C-segment market.

In terms of powertrain options, the combustion-engined versions are expected to use a 1.2-liter three-cylinder hybrid powertrain, while the electric models will feature a front-mounted electric motor. The interior of these models will focus on spaciousness and versatility, with rugged finishes that are practical and hard-wearing. Fiat will also incorporate recycled materials into the design to emphasize sustainability.

One key aspect that Fiat will address with these new models is providing enough space for families. By extending the wheelbase and increasing rear legroom, Fiat aims to ensure that these new models are practical for everyday use. The timeline for the release of these models has yet to be confirmed, but Fiat is expected to reveal both models by the end of the year before production begins in 2025.

The introduction of these new models marks a significant shift for Fiat, which has been relatively slow in launching new products in recent years. With the Smart Car platform and access to synergies across Stellantis, Fiat is poised to re-establish itself as a major player in the European automotive market. The new SUVs, along with the revamped Grande Panda, signal Fiat’s commitment to innovation and growth in the competitive automotive industry.
