Long-Term Review: Kia EV9 Still Going Strong After 10,000 Miles

Our long-term Kia EV9 continues to impress as it reaches the 10,000-mile mark, proving that you don’t need a Tesla Cybertruck to turn heads with an electric vehicle. The origami-like design and eye-catching Ocean Blue Matte paint of Kia’s electric three-row SUV have garnered plenty of attention over its first 10,000 miles. While some may not immediately recognize it, the intrigue grows when they learn it’s an electric Kia—although the excitement wanes when the $76,000 price tag is revealed.

Slowly but steadily, the EV9 has covered the miles, taking about half a year to reach the 10,000-mile milestone. Despite the slower pace compared to gas-powered vehicles, the EV9 has shown its versatility in city traffic and crowded parking lots. Its spacious interior with reclining captain’s chairs and deployable ottomans transforms it into a mobile relaxation spot on wheels. The observed economy has improved from 76 to 80 MPGe, showcasing its efficiency.

Long-Distance Viability Assessment

As part of our assessment, we have embarked on longer trips to test the EV9’s long-distance capabilities. Technical assistant Jacob Kurowicki ventured on a 1200-plus-mile journey to Alton, Virginia, and back, making three stops each way to recharge. Despite the added time for charging, Kurowicki praised the EV9 as a road-trip companion, even preferring it over a gas-powered three-row SUV for its adjustable brake regeneration feature. This feature allows the driver to control regenerative braking, optimizing efficiency in different driving conditions.

Mixed Reviews and Minimal Issues

While the EV9 has received many accolades in our logbook, a few complaints have surfaced. The climate control display’s inconvenient placement between the gauge cluster and infotainment screen has been a point of annoyance, especially for the front passenger. However, these minor issues have not overshadowed the overall positive experience with the vehicle. The few problems encountered, such as a malfunctioning wireless charging pad, were quickly resolved under warranty.

Looking Ahead

With the winter months approaching, we are eager to see how the EV9 handles the challenges of a Midwestern winter. As we continue to put the vehicle through its paces, we anticipate further insights into its performance and reliability. The future looks promising for Kia’s electric flagship as it continues to impress with its blend of style, comfort, and efficiency.
