BMW has finally unveiled the new M5, and it’s making quite a statement with its plug-in hybrid powertrain, wide body design, and aggressive appearance. This latest model is the first of its kind to feature an electrified powertrain, promising enhanced performance and driver engagement. Priced from £110,500, customers can place their orders now, with deliveries expected to begin in November. Additionally, a Touring version of the M5 will be revealed in the near future.

In terms of design, the new BMW M5 takes inspiration from the smaller M3, showcasing a bespoke wide body with wider arches both at the front and rear for the first time. The front and rear of the vehicle have been revamped to emphasize its increased width, featuring large intakes, vertically-accented reflectors at the rear, and four round exhaust pipes. The M5 also sports staggered wheel sizes – 20 inches at the front and 21 inches at the rear.

Underneath its striking exterior, the new M5 boasts a completely bespoke suspension setup with wider tracks, utilizing a double wishbone configuration at the front and a five-link formation at the rear. This model is coil-sprung with adaptive dampers and introduces rear-wheel steering for the first time. BMW has equipped the M5 with new compound brake discs as standard, offering more durable carbon ceramics for those looking to push the limits on the track.

Powering the new M5 is a plug-in hybrid powertrain that delivers a combined 716bhp and 1,000Nm of torque. This setup includes an updated 4.4-litre V8 engine capable of producing 576bhp and 750Nm, paired with an electric motor positioned between the engine and gearbox. The electric motor draws power from a 19.6kWh battery pack, allowing the M5 to travel up to 43 miles on electric power alone.

Despite the impressive power figures, the added weight of the hybrid system slightly affects performance compared to its predecessor. The new M5 accelerates from 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds, slightly slower than before, with a top speed of 155mph. However, the top speed can be increased to 189mph with the BMW M Driver’s package.

Inside the cabin, the M5 features adaptive sports seats, a variety of color and trim options, and BMW’s latest technology-infused dashboard. The BMW OS 8.5 user interface includes bespoke M graphics and menus, providing access to functions like a drift analyzer and track telemetry. The car offers various drive modes that can be controlled through the touchscreen display.

For enthusiasts, BMW offers two M modes that allow drivers to customize the chassis systems, steering weight, powertrain mode, and more. These modes can transform the driving experience from a quiet commute to an exhilarating performance drive. While the M5’s power output falls short of the BMW XM Red Label SUV, there are hints that a more powerful model might be in the works.

Looking ahead, BMW will introduce a Touring version of the M5, only the third estate in the model’s history. This variant will compete directly with the Audi RS 7 Avant, expected to replace the current RS 6 in the future. The new M5 promises a thrilling driving experience with its electrified powertrain, advanced chassis systems, and luxurious interior, setting a new standard for high-performance saloons.
