Queensland residents are in for a treat as they will now be eligible for a 20% discount on car registration fees. This initiative by Family Cars Queensland aims to alleviate some financial burdens on the locals and make life a little easier for them. The discount will be applicable to light vehicles registered starting from 16 September 2024, and it is a 12-month deal announced by the State Government to assist struggling Queenslanders.

Notices regarding the discount will be sent out starting from 5 August, and it will be applied to the registration fee and traffic improvement charge, regardless of the type of vehicle being registered. This means that motorcycles and trailers will also benefit from this discount. For those who have recently paid their annual fee, they may have missed out on this discount for now, but they will have the opportunity to avail it during their next registration renewal before the offer expires.

The discount will result in significant savings for vehicle owners. For example, for four-cylinder vehicles, the cost will be reduced by almost $85, bringing it down to $338.75 (excluding compulsory third party insurance, which is managed separately by the Motor Accident Insurance Commission). Additionally, the registration fees for light vehicles in the state will be frozen as of 1 July 2024, instead of increasing annually due to indexation.

Currently, the registration fees vary based on the number of cylinders in the vehicle. For cars with one to three cylinders, the registration fee is $283.55, while for four-cylinder vehicles, it is $360.60, and for V5 or V6 vehicles, it amounts to $570.95. V8 vehicle owners pay $799.60 for registration. This discount and fee freeze will provide much-needed relief to Queensland residents and help them save some money on their vehicle expenses.
