We’ve had the 2024 Nissan Qashqai Ti e-Power for a few months now, and it has quickly become a favorite among the Drive team in Melbourne. We received the car shortly after the Ti e-Power variant was launched in early 2024 and immediately put it to the test with various activities. From family trips to the market to chauffeuring pets, the small hybrid SUV has proven its versatility.
One drive we had yet to experience was a longer road trip, so I decided to take the Qashqai Ti e-Power on a two-hour journey to Lorne for Mother’s Day. The hybrid abilities of the Qashqai were particularly intriguing to me, as I was eager to see how fuel-efficient it could be over an extended drive.
The Nissan e-Power system differs from conventional hybrid systems by using a petrol engine to charge a battery, which then powers an electric motor that drives the wheels. This unique setup not only provides a remarkably quiet driving experience but also delivers a solid power output of 140kW and 330Nm from the front-wheel-drive electric motor.
Driving down the M1 towards the Surf Coast, the Qashqai impressed with its highway comfort, thanks to compliant springs and a premium Bose sound system. The spacious cabin accommodated three passengers comfortably, with ample room in the second row even for adults. The panoramic glass roof and large windows allowed plenty of natural light into the cabin, enhancing the overall driving experience.
As we navigated through Deans Marsh and into Lorne, the Qashqai demonstrated its agility around tight corners and dynamic driving capabilities. Switching to Sport mode increased the powertrain’s responsiveness, making the drive even more engaging. While the ride quality was slightly firm on rough roads, the Qashqai maintained its composure and handled well overall.
Despite not having all-wheel-drive like its larger counterpart, the X-Trail e-Power, the Qashqai’s front-wheel-drive system effectively utilized its power output on various road conditions, including inclement weather. The scenic drive through the Otway forest into Lorne showcased the car’s performance and comfort, with passengers appreciating the serene cabin ambiance and panoramic views.
In Lorne, we explored the town’s attractions and indulged in Greek cuisine at Ipsos restaurant. The Qashqai’s spacious 452-liter boot easily accommodated our shopping bags, thanks to its practical and organized layout. After a leisurely afternoon in Lorne, we headed back home along the coastal route, enjoying the scenic views and engaging ProPilot semi-autonomous driving system on the freeway.
Overall, the Nissan Qashqai Ti e-Power proved to be a versatile and capable companion for our road trip adventure. Its blend of hybrid efficiency, driving dynamics, and comfort amenities made it a standout choice for a small SUV. As we look forward to more journeys with the Qashqai, it continues to impress with its performance and features, making it a compelling option in the hybrid SUV segment.
