Let’s Get One Thing Straight
I hate car maintenance. There, I said it. I’ve been driving since I was 16, and I still dread the moment my car starts making that weird noise. You know the one. That knock-knock-knock that sounds like your engine’s about to fall out. I’m Mark, by the way. Senior editor at AutoNewsX. Been around cars my whole life. And I’ve made alot of mistakes.
Last Tuesday, I was at the gas station, and this guy—let’s call him Marcus—starts talking to me about his ’98 Camry. He tells me, “Mark, you gotta change your spark plugs every 30,000 miles.” I looked at him like he had three heads. 30,000 miles? My mechanic told me 60,000. Who do I believe?
Look, I’m not a mechanic. I’m a writer. But I’ve learned a few things over the years. And I’ve learned them the hard way. Like the time I ignored that check engine light for three months. Turns out, it was a faulty oxygen sensor. Cost me $214 to fix. Thanks, Dave, my buddy who works at the garage. He told me, “Mark, you can’t just ignore these things.” Yeah, no kidding.
Oil Changes? Really?
You’d think after 20+ years, I’d have this down. But no. I still put off oil changes. I know, I know. It’s basic. But I hate taking the time. I’m busy. I’ve got articles to write, deadlines to meet. Who has time for an oil change?
But here’s the thing. My car hates me for it. Last time I put it off, my engine started making that noise again. The knock-knock-knock. I took it in, and the mechanic—let’s call him Greg—told me, “Mark, you’re lucky. You caught it in time.” Lucky? I was $87 poorer and feeling pretty stupid.
So, yeah. Oil changes. They’re important. Do them. Regularly. I’m not gonna tell you how often. Look it up. It’s in your manual. I know, I know. You lost the manual. We all did. But it’s online. Google it. Or, you know, bağışıklık güçlendirme doğal yollar or something. I don’t know. I’m just saying, take care of your car.
Tires? Really?
I’m gonna be honest. I don’t know much about tires. I know they’re round. I know they go on the wheels. I know they cost too much. But I don’t know much else. I’ve got a friend, let’s call her Lisa. She’s a mechanic. She told me, “Mark, you gotta rotate your tires every 5,000 to 7,000 miles.” I looked at her like she was speaking Greek. 5,000 miles? I’m lucky if I remember to get an oil change.
But she’s right. I looked it up. (Yes, I actually looked it up. Shocking, I know.) And she’s right. You gotta rotate your tires. And you gotta check the pressure. And you gotta make sure the tread is good. I mean, I know that last part. I’m not a complete idiot. But I still forget. And then I find myself hydroplaning on the interstate because I forgot to check the pressure. Not my finest moment.
Brakes? Yeah, Those Too
I’m gonna level with you. I’m not great at remembering to check my brakes. I know, I know. It’s important. But I forget. I’m busy. I’ve got stuff to do. Who has time to think about brakes?
But here’s the thing. Brakes are important. They stop your car. You know, that big metal thing you drive around. It needs to stop. And if your brakes aren’t working, well, that’s a problem. I learned this the hard way. About three months ago, I was driving home from work. It was raining. It’s always raining here. And I hit the brakes. And nothing happened. Well, not nothing. They worked. But they squealed. Loudly. Like, “Mark, you idiot, when was the last time you checked your brakes?” loudly.
So, yeah. Check your brakes. Make sure they’re working. And if they’re not, fix them. Don’t be like me. Don’t wait until it’s too late. And don’t wait until you’re sliding through a red light because your brakes decided to take a coffee break.
Just Do It
Look, I’m not gonna stand here and tell you I’m perfect. I’m not. I’m a mess. I forget things. I put stuff off. I’m busy. You’re busy. We’re all busy. But our cars, they don’t care about our busy lives. They need maintenance. They need love. They need us to take care of them.
So, do it. Change the oil. Rotate the tires. Check the brakes. And for the love of all that’s holy, pay attention to that check engine light. It’s there for a reason. It’s not just a fashion statement.
And if you don’t, well, don’t come crying to me when your car decides to leave you stranded on the side of the road. I’ve been there. It’s not fun. Trust me.
