Ford Capri, a beloved icon from the 1970s and 80s, is making a comeback in a new form as an electric coupe-SUV. The revival of this classic car will be unveiled to the world on July 10th, after a nearly 40-year hiatus.

Clues about the return of the Ford Capri were found in a vintage-style advertisement for a company called ‘Comeback Cars’. The ad hinted at bringing back iconic cars for a new era, with references to the history of the Capri coupe. Fans of the Capri noticed nods to the launch year of the Mk1 Capri in 1969 and the end of production for the Mk3 Capri in 1986.

The new Ford Capri will not be a traditional two-door coupe but will be a coupe-SUV, similar to models like the Cupra Tavascan or BMW iX2. It will be built on the Volkswagen MEB platform, exclusively designed for electric vehicles through a partnership between Ford and the VW Group. This platform is also used for other EVs like the Skoda Enyaq, Audi Q4 e-tron, and the Ford Explorer SUV.

The new Capri is expected to offer a range of battery and motor options, similar to the Ford Explorer. Base models may come with a 52kWh battery and a 168bhp electric motor, while higher-end models could feature a 335bhp dual-motor setup and a 79kWh battery. The starting price for the Ford Explorer is £45,875, but the new Capri, being a coupe-SUV with the iconic name, may start around £48,000 to £50,000.
