Mercedes-AMG is currently working on developing an electric performance SUV all on its own. This is a significant shift from the traditional image of AMG being all about powerful V-8s and V-12s. The latest Mercedes-AMG C63 sports sedan has already moved towards a hybrid system, combining an electric motor with a 2.0-liter inline-four engine.
The new AMG SUV will be based on the AMG.EA electric platform, which will also be used for the electric AMG performance sedan that was teased earlier this year. The teaser image of the SUV reveals a sleek design with a low roofline and distinctive fenders. While it is being referred to as a “high-performance off-roader,” it is expected to focus more on on-road performance rather than off-road capabilities.
This upcoming SUV will be the sixth vehicle developed entirely under the AMG brand, following the electric sedan, two generations of AMG GT, the latest SL, and the iconic SLS AMG. Mercedes is emphasizing that the focus of this SUV will be on “emotion and performance,” with the goal of being “AMG First, EV Second.”
No official name has been given to the new SUV yet, but it is being referred to as the “Born in Affalterbach” SUV, paying homage to the city where AMG is headquartered. Test drives for development prototypes are expected to begin this winter, with production anticipated to start by 2027.
It is clear that Mercedes-AMG is fully committed to embracing electric technology while maintaining the high-performance standards that the brand is known for. This move towards electrification reflects the changing landscape of the automotive industry, where sustainability and performance go hand in hand. With the development of this electric performance SUV, Mercedes-AMG is setting the stage for a new era of high-performance electric vehicles.
