Window Shop is back with another exciting episode, this time focusing on finding the perfect car or truck to replace Bandit One’s iconic 1976 Trans Am from the movie “Smokey and the Bandit”. The challenge was to choose a vehicle from no earlier than 2004 and costing no more than $60,000.
Car and Driver’s executive editor K.C. Colwell took over the episode introduction in the absence of Road & Track senior editor John Pearley Huffman. The submissions kicked off with a powerful pickup truck that could rival Bumblebee the Autobot in strength. Surprisingly, contributor Joey Capparella, who has never seen the movie, opted for a heavy German metal car for the Bandit, adding a unique twist to the selection process.
Returning to American roots, K.C. Colwell chose a powerful car with increased power and door count, perfect for a modern-day Bandit who might need to squeeze in a few rounds of golf during a high-speed chase. On the other hand, contributor Jonathon Ramsey envisioned a Bandit who embraces visibility and speed, ultimately narrowing down his choices to one standout candidate.
Host Tony Quiroga brought a jet-black entry to the stage, combining elements from previous submissions to create a unique and intriguing option for the Bandit. With each participant bringing their own perspective and style to the challenge, the anticipation for the final choice to complete the Atlanta-Texarkana-Atlanta run is palpable.
While Pontiacs were not chosen in this episode, the creativity and diversity of the selections showcased the wide range of vehicles that could potentially replace the iconic 1976 Trans Am in a modern remake of “Smokey and the Bandit”. Stay tuned to find out which car will come out on top in this exciting challenge.
