Mercedes is gearing up to compete with BMW’s Neue Klasse by introducing an all-new executive EV that is expected to rival the production version of BMW’s vehicle. This new Mercedes electric saloon is set to arrive in 2026 and will be based on Merc’s all-new MB.EA Medium platform, which will also support an SUV model anticipated to debut in 2025.
The new model will feature significant changes compared to the current EQS and EQE saloon models. One noticeable change is the repositioning of the windscreen to a more traditional and upright stance, aiming to enhance front visibility and reduce the size of the dashboard. The overall proportions of the car have been reimagined, with a shorter nose compared to traditional ICE models, giving it a fresh look.
Although the prototype is camouflaged, it hints at a production-ready design, showcasing a traditional front bonnet instead of the fixed front clamshell found in current EQ cars. The car will likely have upright headlights with a daytime running light at the center. The rear of the vehicle features a gently sloping roofline, a traditional bootlid, and a slightly longer rear overhang for a balanced silhouette.
Under the hood, Mercedes’ next-generation platform will adopt an 800V electrical architecture, promising improved charging capability and efficiency. The battery layout will be in a skateboard style under the cabin to support both single and dual-motor powertrains. This platform differs from the MMA architecture used in smaller Mercedes models like the upcoming electric CLA.
In addition to focusing on efficiency and technology, Mercedes is also working on high-performance Mercedes-AMG variants of this new model. The prototype hints at features like large wheels, high-spec Michelin tires, and large brakes, indicating extreme performance figures with a dual-motor setup. The SUV variant of this new Mercedes saloon is expected to be revealed before the saloon model.
While Mercedes is working on its new electric lineup, it will be interesting to see how it will compete with BMW’s Neue Klasse models in terms of size, shape, and specifications. The electric car market is growing rapidly, offering consumers a wide range of choices, and the competition between these two German giants will surely benefit the customers with innovative and advanced electric vehicles.
