The BMW M5 has made an electrifying debut at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, showcasing the seventh-generation G90 model. Despite being the first electrified version in the M5’s history, it still retains its powerful V8 engine. Deliveries of the new M5 will begin in November, with the M5 Touring set to debut in August.
Under the new muscular bodywork of the G90 M5, you’ll find a slightly updated version of the previous F90’s 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The new model produces 577bhp at 5600 – 6500rpm, which is slightly lower than the 2018 version. However, the addition of a 194bhp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission, powered by a 22.1kWh battery pack, brings the total combined output to an impressive 717bhp and 738lb ft.
While the new hybrid system boosts performance, it also adds significant weight to the car. Weighing in at 2435kg DIN, the G90 M5 is 570kg heavier than its predecessor, resulting in a less favorable power-to-weight ratio. This increase in mass impacts the performance, with the 0-62mph time being a tenth slower than the previous model at 3.5 seconds. Despite this, the top speed remains at 155mph or 189mph with the optional M Driver’s Package.
One of the advantages of the hybrid system is the claimed all-electric range of up to 42.8 miles (WLTP). The M5 features a variable M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and rear-wheel steering for improved agility. The adaptive suspension allows for fine-tuning the ride, and the standard brakes and tires provide optimal performance.
The design of the new BMW M5 is in line with the current M range, featuring an enlarged twin kidney grille, aggressive front fascia, and bold rear bumper with quad exhaust tips. Inside, you’ll find a new steering wheel, dedicated M buttons, a curved screen with the latest Operating System 8.5, and ambient lighting.
The 2025 BMW M5 will be available starting in November, with a starting price of £111,405 in the UK. The powerful specs of the M5 include a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine combined with an electric motor, producing 717bhp and 738lb ft of torque. The car’s weight is 2435kg (DIN) with a power-to-weight ratio of 294bhp/ton and a 0-62mph time of 3.5 seconds.
In conclusion, the new BMW M5 offers a unique combination of electrification and high-performance features, making it a standout model in the M series lineup. With its striking design, powerful engine, and advanced technology, the M5 is set to impress automotive enthusiasts and drivers looking for a thrilling driving experience.
