Fiat, the Italian car manufacturer, is gearing up to launch a new version of their popular city car, the Fiat 500. The current model, known as the 500e, is an electric vehicle that was introduced in 2020. However, Fiat has announced that they will be releasing a hybrid version of the Fiat 500, called the 500 Ibrida, within the next two years.
The Fiat 500 Ibrida is expected to hit the market sometime between late 2025 and early 2026. This new hybrid variant will be developed, engineered, and manufactured in Italy, specifically in the same factory in Turin where the 500e is currently being produced.
The 500 Ibrida is likely to feature a mild-hybrid powertrain that has been utilized in other models under Fiat’s parent company, Stellantis. This powertrain includes a turbocharged 1.2-liter petrol engine paired with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and an integrated electric motor. This setup allows the vehicle to run on pure electric power for short distances, making it ideal for city driving. Additionally, the electric motor provides extra assistance during acceleration. One key advantage of this mild-hybrid system is that it does not require the car to be plugged in for charging.
Adapting this hybrid powertrain to fit the Fiat 500e’s platform may present some challenges, given the vehicle’s smaller size and unique design compared to other models that use the same technology. Fiat has committed to investing €100 million in the 500e, including redesigning its platform to accommodate a new generation of batteries. These enhancements aim to make the Fiat 500e more cost-effective and appealing to potential buyers.
