Hyundai recently made headlines with its IONIQ 5 N models at the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) on June 23. The event saw the company set a remarkable record in the Electric Modified and Production SUV/Crossover categories. This achievement once again demonstrated Hyundai’s commitment to high-performance electric vehicles.

During this year’s PPIHC, Hyundai entered two IONIQ 5 N TA (Time Attack) Specs and one production IONIQ 5 N into the competition. All three models navigated a challenging 12.42-mile course, covering over 4,700 feet in elevation and featuring 156 turns, unpredictable weather, and high-altitude conditions that put both drivers and vehicles to the test.

The IONIQ 5 N TA Spec, driven by Hyundai World Rally driver Dani Sordo, crossed the finish line in 09:30.852, clinching the top spot in the exhibition class. The second TA Spec, piloted by Randy Pobst, completed the race in 09:55.551. These impressive performances showcased the capabilities of the IONIQ 5 N models in demanding racing conditions.

The IONIQ 5 N TA Spec was designed to showcase the production-spec IONIQ 5 N’s strengths with minimal modifications. By making minor software adjustments to boost motor output and incorporating high-performance components like new shock absorbers, motorsport brakes, and slick tires, the TA Spec stayed true to the production model’s essence.

The production IONIQ 5 N, driven by Ron Zaras, a PPIHC newcomer and automotive media personality, finished with a time of 10:49.267, highlighting the model’s outstanding performance straight from the factory.

Hyundai’s Vice President and Head of N Brand and Motorsport, Till Wartenberg, expressed his excitement over the record-breaking achievement at Pikes Peak. He emphasized Hyundai’s commitment to leveraging motorsports events like PPIHC to showcase the exceptional performance of their mass-produced vehicles and push the boundaries of technology to exceed customer expectations.

The success of the IONIQ 5 N at Pikes Peak underscores Hyundai N’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology and performance capabilities. The brand is not only focused on the production IONIQ 5 N but also on developing special variants like the IONIQ 5 N eN1 Cup Car and IONIQ 5 N TA Spec to expand the realm of EV motorsports.

Joon Park, Vice President and Head of N Brand Management Group, highlighted the collaborative effort behind the IONIQ 5 N’s performance at Pikes Peak, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to innovation and creating high-performance EVs that can compete at the highest levels of motorsports.

Hyundai’s history at Pikes Peak dates back to 1992, with notable achievements over the years, including Rod Millen’s victory in the 2-Wheel Drive Showroom Stock division. Hyundai’s legacy at Pikes Peak continued in 2012 when a Hyundai Genesis Coupe, driven by Rhys Millen, set a course record, further solidifying the brand’s presence in the world of motorsports.

Overall, Hyundai’s success at Pikes Peak with the IONIQ 5 N models showcases the brand’s commitment to innovation, performance, and pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology in the competitive world of motorsports.
