Mercedes-Benz has finally unveiled the all-electric G-Class after years of anticipation. This marks the first time in its 45-year history that the G-Class is available in an all-electric version. The new G580, which was initially previewed by the EQG concept in 2021, now joins its combustion-powered counterparts in the lineup, starting at a price of €142,621 (approximately £123,000) in Europe.

Mercedes-Benz has gone all out with the electric G-Class, equipping it with a quad motor powertrain that offers exceptional traction management and innovative off-road capabilities. Each of the four motors produces 145bhp, resulting in a total power output of 579bhp and an impressive torque of 859lb ft. Despite being heavier than the V8-powered AMG G63, the electric G-Class accelerates from 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds and has a top speed of 112mph.

The electric G-Class features unique technologies such as ‘virtual differential locks’ and G-turn, allowing for precise turns on loose surfaces. It also retains a true low range mode and offers an 850mm fording depth, surpassing its combustion-powered counterparts in off-road performance. The power for these systems comes from a 116kWh battery pack that enables a range of 294 miles on a full charge and a rapid 32-minute 0-100 per cent charge time.

In terms of design, the electric G-Class closely resembles its combustion-powered version but includes aerodynamic enhancements such as a raised bonnet, new A-pillar trims, roof lip spoiler, and ‘air curtains’ in the rear wheel arches. The optional black front grille is designed for improved aerodynamics and features an illuminated outer edge. Inside, the G580 boasts the latest MBUX-powered infotainment system and an off-road control centre with enhanced accessibility to various modes.

While UK pricing and availability are yet to be confirmed, the G580 starts at €142,621 in Europe and goes up to €192,524 for the Edition One. With its cutting-edge technology, impressive performance, and luxurious features, the electric Mercedes-Benz G580 G-Class sets a new standard for electric SUVs in the market.
