The next-generation BMW 3-series sedan has been spotted testing in Munich, showcasing a design inspired by the 2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept. The test mule features quad exhaust pipes, confirming the presence of a new generation of gas-powered 3-series sedans alongside the i3 EV. It is expected that the electric 3-series will join the lineup alongside the ICE variants by the 2026 model year. The spy photos reveal that BMW is indeed testing the next-generation 3-series sedan with an internal-combustion powertrain, putting to rest any concerns about the discontinuation of ICE 3-series models.

The camouflaged test mule exhibits significant styling changes reminiscent of the 2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept. It sports new headlights, a slimmer kidney grille, high-mounted tail lights, and quad exhaust tips. The prototype’s shape bears similarities to the Vision Neue Klasse, featuring narrow roof pillars and long windows that enhance the car’s greenhouse effect. While the hood appears more traditional compared to the concept, the sedan retains flush-mounted door handles, unlike the handle-less design of the concept model.

Although the production timeline for the new generation 3-series is not yet clear, it is anticipated that both ICE and EV variants will be available for the 2026 model year. The powertrain options for the traditional 3-series are likely to be carried over from the current generation, including the 2.0-liter turbo four and turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engines. With BMW focusing on meeting stricter emissions regulations, there is a possibility of the return of the 330e plug-in-hybrid model in the new generation lineup.

BMW executives have hinted at the use of an 800-volt architecture for the production version of the Neue Klasse EV, featuring batteries with 20 percent higher energy density. Additionally, new software is expected to enhance the driving range by 30 percent. These advancements align with BMW’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in their future vehicle offerings.
