For the past few years, thieves have been targeting Kia and Hyundai vehicles due to a security flaw that became popular on TikTok. In response, the companies released a software update to address the vulnerability, and the results are promising. According to a report from the Highway Loss Data Institute, theft reports of Kias and Hyundais with the updated software are 53 percent lower compared to cars without the upgrade. The data goes beyond just complete vehicle thefts, including claims for damage to stolen and recovered vehicles, theft of vehicle parts, and items stolen from inside the vehicle. The frequency of whole vehicle theft is estimated to be down by 64%, which is a significant improvement.

One of the theft deterrent strategies implemented by Hyundai and Kia is a sticker on the window to indicate if a car has the new anti-theft software upgrade. Interestingly, vandalism claims were more common for vehicles equipped with the new software, attributed to failed theft attempts that result in broken windows and damage to the steering column. Despite the increase in vandalism claims, the software update has proven effective in preventing thefts and protecting vehicles.

These findings are important in the context of rising theft rates, particularly in California, known as the auto theft capital of the United States. Even in 2024, the trend of thefts has not slowed down. While Kia and Hyundai’s solution may not be as effective as an immobilizer, it has successfully thwarted real threats in the real world, providing security and peace of mind to car owners. This success is a significant achievement and a reason for celebration for those who still have their vehicles intact.
