Limited Edition Heritage Number Plates Released for Sale
Victorian six-digit heritage plates, which were last on sale for just three days in July 2023, are set to make a limited return next month. VicRoads has announced that orders for these exclusive plates will be available again in July 2024, a year after they were suspended.
During this upcoming release, buyers will have the opportunity to select their own plate number between ‘100.000’ and ‘285.000’, as long as the combination has not already been claimed. While more combinations are expected to be revealed in the following weeks, some of the plates included in the sale will be ‘110.911’, ‘111.050’, and ‘111.060’.
After the brief hiatus last year, the sudden surge in demand led to a pause in orders, causing prices to skyrocket from $14,000 to $17,995, marking a nearly 30 per cent increase. VicRoads has not confirmed whether there will be a price adjustment for the upcoming release in July.
The popularity of heritage number plates has been steadily increasing, with many individuals viewing them as a status symbol and lucrative investment opportunity. Not only are individual investors interested, but superannuation funds and investment firms are also eager to acquire these plates as stable assets.
In January 2024, Australia witnessed a record-breaking auction where the NSW ‘1’ number plate sold for an astonishing $11.5 million, while Queensland’s ‘Q1′ fetched $5.66 million. Recently, Victoria ’20’ was sold for $2.54 million, surpassing the previous record set by Victoria ’14’ in May 2022 at $2.27 million.
Just this week, NSW ’54’ was sold for $1.3 million, and Victoria ‘9.696’ found a buyer for $290,000. The exact dates and prices for the upcoming heritage plates release have not been disclosed yet, so enthusiasts are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates on Drive.
