McDonald’s has teamed up with Volvo Trucks North America to introduce Volvo VNR Electric trucks for sustainable delivery in Canada. The trucks will be used by Martin Brower, a leading supply chain solutions provider for global restaurant chains, to support food and beverage deliveries to select McDonald’s restaurants in the greater Montreal and greater Toronto areas.

This partnership aims to help reduce carbon footprint in Canada by expanding the use of alternative-fuel vehicles in Martin Brower’s supply chain fleet. The battery-electric vehicles used for deliveries in these areas will build on the success of the first zero-tailpipe emission tractor deployed in 2022 to support deliveries to McDonald’s restaurants in the Montreal area.

Matthew Blackman, managing director for Canada at Volvo Trucks North America, expressed excitement about McDonald’s commitment to decarbonize transportation of goods. He highlighted the performance and reliability of the Volvo VNR Electric trucks, which have been chosen by global leaders like McDonald’s for their trials.

After a successful trial of the first Class 8 Volvo VNR Electric tractor in the Montreal area, McDonald’s Canada and Martin Brower have decided to add ten more electric vehicles to their fleet. These vehicles will operate in the greater Toronto and greater Montreal areas, with a focus on handling routine routes and large product loads.

Hope Bentley, head of supply chain at McDonald’s Canada, emphasized the company’s global pledge to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. She mentioned that the addition of more electric vehicles to the fleet is a step towards fulfilling this commitment, while ensuring that customers continue to enjoy their favorite orders without any disruptions.

Julie Dell’Aniello, president of Martin Brower Canada, highlighted the long-standing partnership between Martin Brower and McDonald’s, dating back to 1956. Both companies share similar commitments to test alternative-fuel vehicles and reduce carbon emissions. Martin Brower worked closely with Vision Truck Group, a local Volvo Trucks Certified Electric Vehicle Dealer, to determine the best truck configuration based on the routes and application observed during the Montreal trial.

The collaboration between McDonald’s, Martin Brower, and Volvo Trucks North America underscores the importance of sustainable practices in the transportation industry. By embracing electric vehicles and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, these companies are paving the way for a more environmentally friendly future in Canada’s food delivery sector.
