Bentley has transitioned to a high-power plug-in hybrid for its updated Continental GT, following the end of production of its iconic W12 engine. The new ‘Ultra Performance’ V8 plug-in hybrid is featured in the revised Bentley Continental GT Speed, which has been unveiled as the first car to showcase this new powertrain.

Both the GT coupe and GTC convertible have undergone significant enhancements, with nearly 70% of their components being completely new. Despite these updates, the new car still maintains many of the core elements of the previous-generation model, including its MSB platform and basic body structure.

The highlight of the new Continental GT Speed is its powertrain, which boasts a combined power and torque output of 771bhp and 1,000Nm, surpassing the outgoing W12-powered GT Speed by 121bhp and 100Nm. The power is derived from a heavily revised version of Bentley’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine, along with an electric motor positioned between the engine and eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The electric motor draws energy from a 25.9kWh battery pack located behind the rear seats, providing the Speed with an electric driving range of up to 50 miles and reducing the CO2 emissions to just 29g/km. While the new plug-in powertrain focuses on enhancing efficiency, the electric motor also effectively fills in torque gaps during times when the turbochargers are not generating full boost. The engine no longer includes cylinder deactivation, as the vehicle can operate on electric power alone.

In terms of performance, the new Continental GT Speed delivers impressive acceleration figures, including a 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 208mph, despite its substantial weight of 2,495kg. To manage this weight, Bentley has incorporated dual-valve damper technology and a dual-chamber air suspension system, providing a balance between comfort and control. The car is also equipped with a 48V active anti-roll system and an electronically-controlled limited slip differential for added stability.

The exterior of the Continental GT Speed features subtle styling updates that introduce a new design direction for the brand, such as a single round LED headlamp design and a slightly revised grille and bumper. The rear of the car showcases oval rear lights and exhaust pipes, along with a new 22-inch wheel design and expanded paint options.

Inside, the car offers new hardware and software for the infotainment system, as well as a refreshed centre console with cleaner switchgear. These updates also apply to the GTC convertible model, which retains its folding fabric roof available in seven color choices.

The Bentley Continental GT Speed starts at £236,600 and will be the exclusive Continental GT model for the time being, with production of the W12 and V8 models ceasing. The new plug-in hybrid powertrain represents Bentley’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the luxury automotive market.
