Smart vehicles have achieved a significant milestone by receiving a five-star ANCAP safety score for the first time. The Smart #1 and #3 models, both all-electric, were tested under the latest safety standards set by Electric Cars ANCAP, which were last updated in 2023 to align with Euro NCAP criteria. These new standards include more rigorous tests on driver monitoring systems, autonomous emergency braking performance, motorcyclist crash safety, and vehicle submergence.

Although both Smart vehicles boast similar safety features and achieved a full five-star rating, they were tested under different conditions. The smaller Smart #1 received a 96 percent score in the adult occupant protection test, with an 87 percent in the child occupant protection test. The safety assist category scored 94 percent, while the vulnerable road user protection test had a 70 percent score.

On the other hand, the physically larger Smart #3 scored 90 percent, 85 percent, and 84 percent in the adult occupant, child occupant, and vulnerable road user protection tests, respectively. The safety assist category yielded an 86 percent score for the Smart #3. ANCAP Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg commended Smart for achieving these impressive safety results, stating that they would provide reassurance to buyers considering a new car from this unique brand.

With advancements in safety technology and adherence to stringent testing standards, Smart has set a high bar for other manufacturers to follow in ensuring the safety of their vehicles.
