Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) issued a recall and stop-drive order for the Carrera GT supercar last year due to potential suspension joint failure from salt corrosion. Although no accidents occurred, a fix has been developed after over a year. The new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tire, specifically designed for the Carrera GT, will be installed on all models as part of the recall campaign.
The Carrera GT, known for its challenging driving dynamics, lacks stability control and has been involved in notable accidents in the past. The importance of having optimal tires for safety cannot be overstated, as old tires can become brittle and dangerous. Many Carrera GTs are rarely driven, leading to tire deterioration over time. By fitting new, modern tires, Porsche aims to enhance safety and prevent potential accidents.
In addition to the tire upgrade, the suspension components of the Carrera GT are also receiving a significant improvement. New titanium components worth $109,000 will be installed to address corrosion concerns. Despite only one reported case of suspension issues, Porsche is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of all Carrera GT models.
The recall campaign not only focuses on safety but also aims to bring Carrera GT owners back to Porsche dealerships. Offering a $3,500 service credit, Porsche hopes to retain customer loyalty and potentially attract buyers for the upcoming Mission X hypercar. The decision to invest in these upgrades demonstrates Porsche’s commitment to customer safety and satisfaction.
While some may question the extensive and costly nature of the recall fix, Porsche’s thorough approach reflects the brand’s dedication to quality and reliability. By addressing potential safety risks and providing innovative solutions, Porsche continues to uphold its reputation as a leading luxury automaker. The combination of tire and suspension upgrades showcases Porsche’s commitment to excellence and customer care, setting a new standard for automotive recalls and customer service in the industry.
