Lanzante, a British engineering firm known for their work on the McLaren P1 LM and Pagani Zonda Revolucion, is shaking things up in the world of Porsche 911 restomods with their latest creation – the TAG Championship. This unique vehicle is based on the iconic 930 Turbo but comes equipped with a powerful 10,250rpm V6 engine that was originally used in 1980s McLaren F1 cars.
The result is a beastly 911 that produces a whopping 616bhp and weighs only 920kg without fuel, thanks to the use of carbon fiber components. The engine itself, the TAG TTE P01 turbocharged motor, is a proven winner, having led McLaren to three F1 world championships in the mid-80s. Cosworth has rebuilt three race-used units specifically for the TAG Championship project.
To adapt the engine for use in the 911, Lanzante made several modifications, including fitting new pistons, conrods, valves, cams, and revising the intake and exhaust systems. The car also features new titanium turbos that save weight. Despite its impressive performance, the TAG Championship is fully road legal and can run on regular fuel. It is paired with a Porsche 993 gearbox with custom ratios for optimal performance.
This isn’t the first time Lanzante has experimented with the TAG engine in a 911. Last year, they built the TAG Turbo as a tribute to a one-off McLaren-built 911 prototype from the 80s. However, the TAG Championship takes things to a new level with its increased power and lighter weight, focusing on raw performance rather than historical accuracy.
The interior of the TAG Championship has been stripped down to the bare essentials, with features like electric windows and mirrors removed in favor of a lightweight climate control system. The car also boasts a roll cage and carbon-backed Recaro seats with six-point harnesses, enhancing the overall motorsport feel.
Only three units of the TAG Championship will be produced, with the first one set to debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This limited production run makes these vehicles highly exclusive and sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike. Lanzante’s innovative approach to blending McLaren F1 power with the iconic Porsche 911 platform has resulted in a truly unique and thrilling driving experience that is sure to turn heads wherever it goes.
