Ford has introduced the most extreme road-going Mustang ever produced, the Mustang GTD, which is a collaboration between Ford Performance and Multimatic. This limited-run model is inspired by the Mustang GT3 racing car and is homologated for road use. The first European cars are set to enter production in mid-2025, with a price tag starting at £315,000.

Named after the IMSA GTD racing class, the Mustang GTD is designed for ultimate track performance. It features cutting-edge technology under its carbon fiber skin, including a semi-active DSSV Multimatic suspension and a transaxle cooling system. The suspension system allows for ride height adjustments on the fly and the driver can also adjust the spring rate.

Under the hood, the Mustang GTD boasts a unique 800bhp 5.2-liter dry sump supercharged V8 engine that can rev over 7500rpm. It is paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission that drives the rear wheels. The vehicle also features a Variable Traction Control system in track mode to make its high power output more accessible.

The bodywork of the Mustang GTD is mostly new and constructed from carbon fiber to save weight. It also features elements like a carbon fiber driveshaft and dramatic aero for improved performance. The vehicle comes equipped with 20-inch forged aluminum or magnesium wheels wrapped in wide tires, along with Brembo carbon ceramic brakes.

In terms of aerodynamics, the Mustang GTD features active aerodynamic solutions, including a hydraulically controlled rear wing and a carbon fiber undertray with hydraulically controlled flaps. Inside, the vehicle is equipped with track-oriented materials like ‘Miko suede’, leather, and carbon fiber. The rear seats have been removed for weight savings, with the front seats replaced with supportive Recaro items.

At its launch, Ford’s president and CEO, Jim Farley, described the Mustang GTD as a new approach, stating that it’s a race car built for the road. The vehicle will be available to a limited number of customers in the US for $300,000 and will start hitting the road towards the end of 2024. Order books for Europe and Asia have just opened, with European models starting at £315,000.

The Ford Mustang GTD is a high-performance machine that combines racing technology with road capabilities, making it a unique addition to the Mustang lineup. With its advanced engineering and track-focused design, the Mustang GTD promises an exhilarating driving experience for those lucky enough to get behind the wheel.
