Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un are known to have a close relationship, which is concerning for global diplomacy. Putin recently gifted Kim a luxurious Russian-made limo, the Aurus Senat, marking the second time he has done so this year. The two leaders were seen driving around together in the limo, with Kim even taking the wheel at one point. The extravagant gift is just one example of the lavish lifestyle enjoyed by these dictators.
The Aurus Senat is a massive luxury vehicle, comparable to a Rolls-Royce or Maybach. It was created in 2018 at Putin’s request for a new luxury car for his motorcade. The Senat model gifted to Kim features a powerful 4.4-liter twin-turbo hybrid V8 engine with 590 horsepower, developed by Porsche. The car exudes opulence, from its imposing front grille to its luxurious interior, fitting for leaders with authoritarian tendencies.
Interestingly, this is not the first time Putin has gifted Kim an Aurus Senat. In February, Putin gave Kim his first Senat, making this the second one he has received in less than six months. In return, Kim reportedly gave Putin artwork and two Pungsan dogs, a North Korean hunting breed. The exchange of extravagant gifts between these two dictators raises eyebrows, especially given their oppressive regimes and actions.
It is surreal to imagine the two leaders cruising around in their luxury limo, enjoying the finer things in life while their people suffer under their rule. The optics of such a display of wealth and power are troubling, especially considering the current geopolitical climate. One can’t help but wonder who was in control of the radio during their joyride. The close relationship between Putin and Kim highlights the complicated and often murky world of international politics.
