I was deeply saddened to learn about the recent passing of a true powerhouse in the automotive industry, Nick Reilly. With an impressive 37-year career at General Motors, he served as chairman and managing director of Vauxhall in the late 1990s, following four years in charge of the Ellesmere Port plant. His leadership extended to heading the Vauxhall/Opel European operation from 2009 until his retirement in 2012.

In my role as an editor, I have had the opportunity to interact with many industry leaders, and Nick Reilly stood out as a figure who commanded respect and admiration. He is credited with leading GM Europe out of the early 2000s recession, displaying a unique blend of drive, humility, and the ability to inspire those around him.

Not only was Nick Reilly a significant figure in the British car industry, but he also demonstrated his commitment by forgoing a substantial salary to preserve Vauxhall’s plants in Luton and Merseyside. His impact on the automotive sector was recognized by the Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Mike Hawes, who described him as a leading global auto industry figure known for his insightful problem-solving skills and good humor.

Rising through the ranks to the top echelons of one of the world’s largest car companies is no small feat, and Nick Reilly’s long-standing tenure speaks volumes about his abilities as a leader. He was not only a skilled executive but also a compassionate individual who found time to connect with everyone he encountered, as I experienced firsthand during his time at GM Europe.

Among his many achievements, Nick Reilly played a pivotal role in guiding Vauxhall and its UK plants through challenging times, leaving a lasting legacy in the industry. His dedication and management have contributed to the continued success of these plants. As a proud Welsh rugby fan, he was admired for his inspirational leadership and ability to relate to people from all walks of life.

The automotive industry has lost a true legend, and on behalf of everyone at Auto Express, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Nick Reilly’s impact on the sector will be remembered for years to come, and his legacy as one of the UK’s automotive leaders is undeniable.

As an editor, my role is to guide the talented team at Auto Express, Carbuyer, and Driving Electric to deliver the latest stories and insights to our readers.
