Ford has recently announced a new recall affecting 30,735 Mustangs from the 2022 and 2023 model years due to potential steering issues. The company has stated that there have been no reported accidents or injuries related to this problem, which is good news. However, this recall may lead to a fresh wave of jokes about Mustangs crashing.
The recall applies to both EcoBoost and GT trims, as it is a widespread issue regardless of the specific trim. The problem lies in a secondary digital torque sensor that may have been calibrated incorrectly, resulting in the steering gear not functioning properly. Since these Mustang models utilize electronic steering, a faulty sensor could cause the steering wheel to move back and forth unexpectedly when the driver attempts to turn.
While the extent of the steering wheel’s movement is not explicitly mentioned, Ford has described it as being able to “turn side to side against the driver’s intentions.” The company began investigating this issue in late May after receiving reports of steering gear malfunctions from a supplier. Ford has identified two warranty claims that may be linked to this problem.
The solution to this issue is relatively simple. Ford dealers will update the software for the Mustang’s Power Steering Control Module to rectify the problem. Individual owners will start receiving notifications about this recall on August 5, although dealers have already been informed. For any inquiries or concerns, Mustang owners can contact their local dealer or reach out to Ford directly at 866-436-7332.
This recall is just the latest in a series of recalls from Ford in recent times. Just a week ago, 552,118 F-150 trucks were recalled due to a transmission issue. Additionally, there was another Mustang recall in early June related to a potential fire hazard. According to the US Department of Transportation, Ford has issued a total of 32 recalls in 2024 alone, impacting millions of vehicles.
It is important for Mustang owners to take this recall seriously and act promptly to address the steering issue. Safety should always be the top priority when it comes to vehicle recalls, and Ford is working diligently to ensure that all affected vehicles are repaired as soon as possible.
