Hyundai is recalling 1545 Hyundai Nexo SUVs in the U.S. due to a hydrogen gas emission issue. This recall affects almost all Nexo vehicles sold in the country since 2019. The problem lies with the Thermally-activated Pressure Relief Device (TPRD), which is designed to release hydrogen gas if the fuel tanks overheat to prevent over-pressurization. However, micro-cracks in the glass bulb of the TPRD can cause the gas to escape prematurely during normal operation, posing a fire risk.
Hyundai will replace the glass bulb with a metal unit to address this issue. Owners of the affected vehicles are advised to park their cars outside and away from structures until the recall is completed. If the bulb breaks, drivers will notice a white cloud at the rear of the vehicle, a loud wind-like noise, rapid depletion of the fuel gauge, and a malfunction light on the gauge cluster.
The new metal TPRD units have been installed in new Nexos since May 21, 2024. Hyundai will notify affected owners by mail on December 10 and will carry out the fix free of charge. In the meantime, Nexo owners can check the NHTSA recalls website to see if their vehicle is part of the recall.
