From crazy drivers to dangerous incidents, it sometimes feels like the roads are a lawless place. While some of us have a relaxed attitude towards driving, others seem to have a short fuse and get aggressive behind the wheel. Have you ever experienced a wild road rage incident? Maybe someone thought they had the right to cut you off on the highway, or perhaps another driver got angry because you didn’t turn quickly enough on a red light. How intense did the altercation get? It’s not uncommon for enraged individuals to get out of their cars, make threats, or even throw objects like a child having a tantrum.

When I think of road rage, I can’t help but remember a shocking event that took place in January 2022 on I-95 in Miami. A driver, Eric Popper, pulled out a gun and started shooting after being cut off by another driver on the highway. The other driver threw a water bottle at Popper’s car, which led Popper to believe he was being shot at. In a moment of panic, Popper raised his weapon, waited for the car to pass him, and then fired shots through his own passenger-side window.

In a surprising turn of events, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office dropped charges against Popper in March 2023. His lawyer successfully argued that the shooting was an act of self-defense under Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law. It goes to show how road rage incidents can quickly escalate and have serious consequences.
