Toyota is stepping up its game with the 2025 upgrades to the GR86, one of the best affordable sports cars out there. The improvements are designed to enhance the already thrilling driving experience, making it even more enjoyable for enthusiasts. In addition to the general updates, Toyota is reintroducing the Hakone Edition for those looking for a more unique and exclusive ride.

For the 2025 GR86 models, Toyota has made significant changes to the handling and performance. The re-tuned dampers and electronic power steering aim to deliver better handling response and improved ground contact feel. The electronic throttle control has been re-programmed for faster response, especially for cars with the manual transmission. Engine torque control has also been adjusted to enhance downshift throttle blips. Automatic transmission models have not been overlooked, with re-mapped six-speed units allowing for higher threshold manual-mode paddle downshifts for a more spirited driving experience.

The Hakone Edition pays homage to the 2020 special edition of the previous-generation 86 and is named after the famous Hakone Turnpike near Tokyo. The limited production variant features a unique dark green color inspired by the surrounding trees along the mountain pass. Despite maintaining the 2.4-liter flat-four engine’s 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, the Hakone Edition comes with upgraded suspension using Sachs dampers and enhanced braking with Brembo 4-piston calipers at the front and two-piston calipers at the rear.

Distinctive features of the Hakone Edition include 18-inch bronze wheels, a ducktail spoiler at the rear, bronze accents, a tan Ultrasuede interior, an exclusive shift knob, and Hakone badging throughout. With only 860 units available in the U.S., the Hakone Edition is expected to generate high demand, considering the limited availability compared to the 200 units offered in Japan. Although pricing details are yet to be revealed, securing one of these special editions may prove to be a challenge, as not every Toyota dealership will have access to them when they arrive in showrooms in fall 2024.
