Bentley is saying goodbye to the iconic W12 engine in its Continental GT and Flying Spur models, but it’s not all bad news. The luxury carmaker is introducing a new V8 hybrid powertrain that promises even more power and efficiency than before.

While exact technical details of the new hybrid setup, called the ‘Ultra Performance Hybrid,’ have not been revealed yet, it is expected to be based on the 4-litre twin-turbo V8 powertrain used in the Porsche Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid. This means the new Bentley models will offer more than 740bhp, a significant increase over the W12-powered versions.

The hybrid system will provide 50 miles of electric range, but it will also come with a weight penalty of around 300-400kg compared to the pure-petrol V8 models. Despite the added weight, Bentley claims that the new powertrain will offer better response than any of its previous models and have a WLTP CO2 figure of less than 50g/km.

For those who still love the W12 models, there are a few remaining examples available for purchase, including the new Batur Convertible, before production ends this summer. More details about the new hybrid engine will be announced in the coming weeks.

In addition to the new hybrid powertrain, Bentley has also released a clip showcasing how the new engine sounds, with a familiar cross-plane gargle from existing Bentley V8s. This promises to be a thrilling driving experience for Bentley enthusiasts who value both performance and efficiency in their luxury vehicles.
