In 1979, a black and mustard-colored 1979 Lamborghini Countach LP 400 S from the iconic 1981 movie “The Cannonball Run” stole the hearts of many car enthusiasts. This unique car featured 12 exhaust pipes and a rack full of carburetors, making it a standout even among Lamborghinis. The opening scene of the movie remains a historical artifact that mesmerized young car enthusiasts and inspired the Cannonballers cult that still exists today.

To celebrate the 45th anniversary of this hero car, Lamborghini recently reunited the actresses who drove it in the film. Adrienne Barbeau, who played Marcie Thatcher, and Tara Buckman, who played Jill Rivers, reflected on their experiences with the iconic vehicle. Barbeau mentioned how the success of the movie led to autograph requests, especially on Countach model cars, while Buckman recalled signing countless photos and model cars of the Countach over the years.

The Nero over Senape coupe was initially shipped from Sant’Agata to a dealership in Rome before making its way to a buyer in Florida, thanks to Cannonball director Hal Needham’s connection. The props department added unique features to the car, such as a front wing, extra headlights, antennas, and exhaust pipes, to ensure it stood out on screen. Although the mobile phone and fake gauges in the cockpit have been removed, the car still retains its movie-spec look.

After spotting the car in 2007, Florida resident Jeff Ippoliti eventually purchased it in 2009 after extensive negotiations. In 2021, the Countach was added to the National Historic Vehicle Register by the Library of Congress, becoming the 30th car to receive this prestigious recognition. Despite its historical significance, the film itself has yet to be included in the National Film Registry.

The legacy of the 1979 Lamborghini Countach LP 400 S from “The Cannonball Run” lives on not only in the hearts of car enthusiasts but also in the annals of cinematic history. This iconic vehicle continues to captivate audiences with its unique design and role in one of the most beloved car movies of all time.
