BMW has recently unveiled the 2022 BMW 1-Series M135 xDrive, a hot hatch that promises enhanced performance and driving dynamics to compete with the likes of Audi’s new S3. The upgrades to the M135 aim to address some of the shortcomings highlighted in evo’s hot hatch mega test, where it ranked 13th out of 18 contenders.
The new M135 comes as part of a comprehensive facelift for the BMW 1-series, featuring improvements to its chassis, design, and interior. BMW has emphasized the precision in the handling of the M135, achieved through a stiffer bodyshell, revised suspension geometry, and the availability of a track-oriented M Technology package. This package includes unique dampers, roll bars, underbody bracing, M compound brakes, and forged 19-inch alloy wheels with optional track-spec tires.
In terms of performance, the M135 is equipped with a 2-liter turbo engine that delivers 296bhp and 295lb ft of torque. While slightly underpowered compared to the Audi S3, the M135 has the potential to challenge its rival. However, it’s worth noting that the new M135 has lost 6bhp and 37lb ft compared to its predecessor, resulting in a slower acceleration time of 4.9 seconds to reach 62mph.
Visually, the M135 sports a new nose with conjoined kidney grilles at the front and redesigned tail lights with quad-exhaust tips at the rear. Inside, drivers will find a new sports steering wheel, a redesigned dashboard, and BMW’s latest iDrive Operating System 9 technology suite, accessible through a dual-screen panel on the dash. The interior also features control surfaces inspired by the BMW iX1 crossover, including a gear selector switch and driving mode button on a new center console.
While the M135 offers advanced features such as digital smartphone key functionality and remote payment capabilities through OS 9, some enthusiasts may miss the rotary controller for the infotainment system present in the previous model. The starting price for the M135 is £41,000, excluding additional on-the-road costs.
Overall, the 2022 BMW 1-Series M135 xDrive represents a significant update to BMW’s hot hatch lineup, aiming to deliver a more engaging driving experience and improved performance to attract hot hatch enthusiasts looking for a blend of agility and comfort. With its enhanced dynamics and updated features, the M135 is poised to take on the competition in the hot hatch segment and potentially climb the ranks in future performance tests.
