Potential 500-HP Rotary i8 Model by BMW or Another Automaker

In the world of modern exotics, the BMW i8 stands out as a sleek and stylish machine. However, for those seeking more power and a better sound to match its aesthetic appeal, a new project spearheaded by Jon Volk might just be the answer. Volk, known for his previous ambitious builds, has set out to transform the i8 by swapping in a 13B Mazda rotary engine and Audi dual-clutch transmission while retaining the hybrid system. This move promises to inject some much-needed excitement into the i8’s performance capabilities.

The Vision Behind the Build

Volk’s decision to undertake this project was driven by a desire to create a versatile vehicle that could be enjoyed daily, on the track, and even at the drag strip while accommodating his family. With limited options available for mid-engine cars with back seats, Volk narrowed down his choices to the i8 or Lotus Evora. Opting for the i8 due to its unique challenges, he embarked on a journey to revamp the car’s powertrain to meet his high-performance expectations.

The Heart of the Beast

The BMW i8’s compact chassis posed a challenge for Volk, as the space constraints limited the options for a more potent engine. Enter the 13B-REW rotary engine from an RX-7, a compact yet powerful solution that fit snugly within the i8’s engine bay. Volk’s meticulous modifications to the rotary engine, including a street port and custom components, are aimed at boosting the power output to around 500 horsepower, with additional gains from the front electric motor.

Shifting Gears for Success

One of the significant modifications Volk made was replacing the i8’s factory transmission with a seven-speed dual-clutch unit from an Audi RS3. This upgrade was necessary to unleash the full potential of the revamped powertrain, as the stock transmission’s limitations were inhibiting the i8’s performance capabilities. With the project still ongoing, Volk’s meticulous planning and attention to detail are setting the stage for a groundbreaking debut at the upcoming Grid Life event at Lime Rock Park.

Stay tuned for the final unveiling of this unique project, as Jon Volk’s innovative approach to enhancing the BMW i8’s performance could redefine the boundaries of modern automotive customization.
