Between the chaos of political unrest and the increasing presence of advanced artificial intelligence, it can sometimes feel like we are living in a modern-day version of George Orwell’s dystopian novel, 1984. However, amidst all this, there is a beacon of positivity shining through at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
Honda and Pininfarina have joined forces to restore the iconic HP-X concept car, which was Honda’s very first concept vehicle. Originally unveiled at the 1984 Turin auto show, the HP-X is set to make a grand return at the prestigious Pebble Beach event in August 2024.
The HP-X, with its mid-mounted 2.0-liter V-6 engine, is a compact beauty, measuring just 163.8 inches long and standing at a mere 43.7 inches tall. Its sleek wedge-shaped body, featuring a distinctive single-piece Perspex canopy, showcases a unique design that was ahead of its time. The car’s two-tone paint finish, with white and dark blue sections separated by a striking red stripe, adds to its sporty appeal.
Apart from its eye-catching aesthetics, the HP-X was also ahead of its time in terms of technology and performance. With advanced aerodynamics incorporating ground effects and a driver-controlled air brake system, the HP-X was a true innovation. The use of carbon fiber and Kevlar in its construction helped keep the weight to a minimum, enhancing its performance capabilities.
Under the hood, the HP-X boasts a mid-mounted DOHC 24-valve 2.0-liter V-6 engine, derived from Honda’s Formula 2 racing engine. The cabin is equipped with cutting-edge features such as real-time telemetry, GPS, and road condition warnings using sonar technology, showcasing the concept’s futuristic vision.
While the HP-X never made it to production, its legacy lives on in the development of the iconic first-generation NSX, a vehicle that achieved global success under the Honda and Acura brands. The restoration of the HP-X not only honors its historic significance but also highlights the pivotal role it played in shaping Honda’s future automotive endeavors.
As car enthusiasts eagerly await the unveiling of the restored HP-X concept at Pebble Beach, the event promises to be a celebration of automotive history and innovation. Stay tuned for more updates as we countdown to the exciting showcase of this iconic piece of automotive heritage.
