Toyota made a big change with the launch of the new Land Cruiser (300 Series) in 2021 by not offering a V-8 engine, which disappointed many fans. Then, in 2023, the 250 Series was released in North America, but it also did not come with a V-8 or even a six-cylinder engine. The Land Cruiser is still available in some markets with a V-8 engine, but that is quickly changing due to evolving regulations and community expectations. The 70 Series, which has been around for 40 years and is still sold in Australia, is also losing its 4.5-liter turbodiesel V-8 engine. This decision was made due to changing regulations and expectations in the automotive industry.

Production of certain Land Cruiser models will be ending soon, including the four-door Wagon, two-door Troop Carrier, and single- and double-cab pickup trucks in the GX trim level. The final units of these models will be delivered to customers by the end of the year. However, the pickups in GXL trim will still be available until later next year. Although the V-8 engine will no longer be offered, Toyota will continue to offer a five-speed manual gearbox with a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine starting in October.

Despite these changes, the Land Cruiser remains popular and in demand, especially in Australia where newly placed orders may take 3-6 months to fulfill. The simplicity and reliability of the LC70 model are key factors contributing to its continued popularity, as it offers a straightforward driving experience without the complexity of modern vehicles filled with technology. In fact, the Land Cruiser received modern updates in 2023, such as a touchscreen display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic high-beam, speed sign assist, and lane departure warning.

It’s important to note that the Land Cruiser has evolved over the years since its introduction in 1984, with the latest models offering a blend of rugged off-road capability and modern features. While the V-8 engine may no longer be available in certain markets, the Land Cruiser continues to be a reliable and sought-after vehicle for those who value simplicity and dependability.
