Ahead of its upcoming launch this summer, Audi decided to put their new Audi RS 3 to the test at the Nürburgring. The results were impressive, with the facelifted RS3 breaking the lap record with a time of 7 minutes and 33.123 seconds in its pre-production form. This time is two seconds faster than the previous RS 3 model, over six seconds quicker than the Renault Sport Megane RS Trophy R, and a significant 11 seconds ahead of the FL5 Honda Civic Type R.
The record-breaking lap time can be attributed to the advancements in the RS 3’s chassis hardware, including Audi’s RS torque splitter that enables variable torque distribution, brake torque vectoring that manages torque delivery to each wheel, Audi Sport’s latest adaptive sports suspension, and a comprehensive revision of the electronic stability control systems. Frank Stippler, the legendary Audi racer and development driver, highlighted that the RS3’s improved cornering capabilities, thanks to fine-tuning and brake torque vectoring, allowed for better positioning and quicker acceleration out of corners.
Despite the impressive performance, the RS 3 still retains Audi’s 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged engine, which produces 394bhp and 369lb ft of torque. This model will be the last Audi vehicle to feature this unique engine. The lap record-setting car was equipped with 19-inch carbon-ceramic brakes and Pirelli Trofeo R tires, which have been available as an option since 2021 (excluding UK models).
The success of the new Audi RS 3 at the Nürburgring showcases the brand’s commitment to performance and innovation. With its record-breaking lap time and advanced technology, the RS 3 is set to make a significant impact in the hyper-hatch segment upon its official launch later this summer. Car enthusiasts can look forward to experiencing the thrill of driving the fastest Audi RS 3 ever created, with improved handling, speed, and cornering capabilities that set it apart from its competitors.
