Did you hear the news about the Delorean DMC-12 being converted into an electric vehicle by Electrogenic? This Oxford-based company has developed a ‘plug and play’ kit for the iconic car, known for its appearance in the Back to the Future trilogy. While the kit may not provide the 1.21 gigawatts that Doc Brown sought, it does come with a new 43kWh OEM-grade battery offering a range of over 150 miles. This battery is designed to replace the original petrol tank location in the car.

In addition to the new battery, the old 130bhp V6 engine is replaced by a single electric motor that delivers 215bhp and 310Nm of torque. This upgrade significantly reduces the car’s 0-62mph time to under 5 seconds, making it much quicker to reach 88mph. The kit also includes Eco and Sport drive modes, adjustable regenerative braking, and launch control features.

While the conversion kit does not include a flux capacitor or time circuits, the first DMC-12 fitted with Electrogenic’s kit has received upgrades like Apple CarPlay, improved air conditioning, and a virtual dashboard displaying various information. Electrogenic’s CEO, Steve Drummond, emphasized that converting the DMC-12 into an EV aligns with the original vision of creating a sustainable sports car.

For DeLorean owners concerned about altering their vehicles, Electrogenic assures that the conversion is reversible without any cutting required. The company has a network of partner-installers to assist with the installation process, catering to both manual and automatic versions of the DMC-12. This conversion kit is part of Electrogenic’s broader initiative to offer ‘drop-in’ EV conversion kits for various classic cars, including the Jaguar E-Type, Land Rover Defender, classic Porsche 911s, and the original Mini.
