Volkswagen is making a shift towards electric vehicles, with plans to go all-electric with their performance sub-brand, R, by 2030. This means that models like the petrol-powered Golf R may soon become a thing of the past. The newly updated Mk8.5 Golf R is expected to be the final generation of this model as we know it.

Despite the move towards electric power, Volkswagen has not held back in making the Mk8.5 Golf R the most powerful version yet. It is equipped with the EA888 turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 328bhp, which is a 12bhp increase from previous models. The engine has been calibrated to improve response and performance in the sportiest drive modes. The acceleration from 0-62mph is achieved in 4.6 seconds, with a top speed of 155mph.

The Mk8.5 Golf R retains its torque vectoring rear differential, allowing for up to 100% of torque to be directed to the rear axle, providing enhanced control and agility. The car also features various driving modes, including Eco, Comfort, Sport, Race, Individual, and Special, each offering a different driving experience tailored to the driver’s preferences.

In terms of design updates, the Mk8.5 Golf R boasts new bumpers, LED lights, and an illuminated Volkswagen badge on the front. The interior has seen significant improvements, with a new 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a digital GPS lap timer for track data logging. The car also comes with a 10.2-inch digital dial pack as standard.

The chassis of the Mk8.5 Golf R has undergone minor calibration tweaks, with adaptive DCC dampers and new forged 19-inch wheels available as options. The haptic touch controls on the steering wheel have been adjusted to require a firmer push, enhancing the driving experience and reducing accidental activations.

While the pricing for the Mk8.5 Golf R has not been announced yet, it is expected to exceed £40,000 in the UK, with the estate version likely to cost slightly more. Overall, Volkswagen’s transition to electric power with their R sub-brand marks an exciting new chapter for the iconic Golf R model, combining performance with modern technology and design.
