Kalmar Automotive, a UK-based sports car manufacturer, has introduced its very first electric model, the Kalmar 7-97 E-Volt. This electric Porsche 911 restomod is based on the 964-generation Porsche 911 and combines classic Porsche design with modern EV technology. However, this conversion comes at a price, with starting prices around €450,000.
The 7-97 E-Volt retains the iconic design of the 964 Porsche 911 while incorporating elements from the exclusive 911 R of 1967. The bodywork has been extensively modified to reduce weight, drag, and increase downforce. Many parts have been recreated in aluminum, including the windows, to enhance aerodynamic efficiency and reduce wind noise.
What sets the Kalmar 7-97 E-Volt apart is its use of plant-based materials for its bodywork and interior panels. By utilizing flax fibers bonded with biodegradable resin, this electric Porsche not only reduces its environmental impact but also maintains a lightweight construction. This eco-friendly material has already absorbed carbon dioxide during its growth cycle, resulting in a 78% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to carbon fiber.
Under the hood, the Kalmar 7-97 E-Volt is equipped with a re-engineered Tesla Model S powertrain, delivering 450bhp and 487lb ft of electric torque. This results in impressive performance, with 0-62mph acceleration in under 4 seconds. The electric motor is paired with a 63kWh battery pack for a range of over 200 miles on a full charge.
In terms of handling, the suspension system has been adjusted to accommodate the new weight distribution of the electric powertrain. Buyers have the option to choose between standard brakes or upgrade to Kalmar’s lightweight braking system in either steel or carbon ceramic. The cabin of the Kalmar 7-97 E-Volt maintains the classic design of the original 964 Porsche 911 with added features like Apple CarPlay, a floor-mounted subwoofer, and sustainably-sourced leather seats.
One unique feature of the Kalmar 7-97 E-Volt is its reversible conversion process. If owners decide they prefer the combustion-powered version, the conversion can be reversed with minimal modifications.
